Frequently Asked Questions

When is the schedule for the upcoming season's activities posted on the website?

The schedule is usually completed sometime in January and published in our Events Calendar on the homepage of our website.

Must I own a boat to join the club?

No. Typically, new sailors do not own a boat. The city has a sailboat rental program and there are also club-owned boats that members may use once they have met the requirements of the LTYC Club Sailboat Usage Policy.

Many times, during our monthly race series and social sails, skippers are looking for crew. Members and guests may add their name to the 'Available to Crew' section of the sign-up sheet. On race days, you may also sign up to help on race committee, which is an excellent way to watch and learn aobut sailboat racing.

Does the yacht club have boats for rent?

The yacht club has boats that members may use (see above), but does not rent them.

The City of Greensboro, however, does rent boats at Lake Townsend. There are three type of boats for rent - Sunfish / Aqua-Finn, Laser-Pico, and Capri-14. They are kept on floating docks so they're easy to launch and retrieve. The Capri-14 can accomodate three, has a mainsail and jib sail and also a centerboard.

The boats are owned by the City of Greensboro and the rental is handled by the lake wardens. For more information about the sailboat rentals at Lake Townsend, including hours of operation and contact information, see the Lake Townsend Watershed Parks website

How can I learn how to sail?

The yacht club conducts Adult Learn to Sail Classes and Junior Learn to Sail Camps throughout the summer. These are an excellent opportunity to learn how to sail a boat. No experience is necessary (although you must be able to swim).
