Lake Townsend Yacht Club continues to provide one of the best sailing programs in the state.
Not an exclusive or expensive sailing club!
We are a very friendly, diverse group of people who enjoy cruising and racing small to medium size sailboats on Lake Townsend. You do not need to own a boat to join the club or to go sailing with us.
On September 27, 1977 a few sailing enthusiasts met with city officials of the Parks and Recreation Department and Water and Sewer Department to present a proposal for formation of the Lake Townsend Yacht Club. The objective of the club is to promote sailing and to establish and maintain a club for athletic, recreational and social purposes. Through the continued cooperation and support of the city and club members, LTYC continues to be one of the most successful in the state. Races are held monthly throughout the year as well as a number of daysailing and cruising events.
The premier racing event of the year is the Mayor's Cup Regatta which is held in June. There are usually forty or more boats entered by skippers from all over the state. Over the years, the club has sponsored a number of activities for nonmembers and the community in general - such as, sailing days for the Special Populations, open house and sailing seminars.
In the past two years, over 120 people have been through our sailing instruction course. The Frostbite series,
Summer Series, Mayor's Cup Regatta and Interclub Regatta provide racing opportunities every month of the year. A core group of cruising members have enjoyed weekend and day cruising at Belews Lake, Jordan Lake,
Kerr Lake and on North Carolina's coastal waters.
Lake Townsend is one of the best inland sailing venues in the state. The restrictions on power boats ensure that sailboats
never contend with choppy water created by skiers and jet skis. With our pontoon signal boat and two Carolina skiffs, we can set race courses
to match the wind conditions and make racing safe and enjoyable. With strong fleet of Flying Scots and a handicap class with a
good mixture of other mono-hulls and multi-hulls we offer very competitive racing and a variety of learning experiences
for new sailors.
Please consider joining us in the fun! The low price of membership makes this an incredible opportunity.
Contact our Membership Chairperson if you need further information or have any questions about the club.
We hope to see you soon at Lake Townsend.
